Yep, I did it!
I try to limit the amount I use my phone and digital devices but they still seem to sneak up on me, and I find the come out more often than I do.
So I put my phone in the naughty corner for 24 hours.
It didn’t kick and scream and carry on because it was feeling left out or left behind. It just quietly went to the corner so I could have some ME time.
Digital Detox here I come.
On Easter Saturday I was invited to a friend’s 60th over at the Sunshine Coast, so I made the conscious decision to put my phone away. So I left it at home, YEP I did not take it with me at all!
Before I left, I was met with the usual thoughts and issues one may face not being contactable in a world that is so connected.
I dropped it back a gear, dusted my MacGyver skills off and marched forward. Below are the issues I faced when my phone tried to convince me to take it along for the ride and how I thought MacGyver would solve them.
This may be the handbook we have all been searching for!
Problem – What if there is an Emergency?
MacGyver says – “Leave an emergency contact number on the fridge.”
Problem- What if they aren’t there when I arrive?
MacGyver says-“Make plans with your friend before you leave” things like “What time you will arrive” and stick to it
Problem- What if someone is trying to contact you?
MacGyver says- “It shouldn’t matter because you are going to spend some quality time with other friends and you should be enjoying the time with them.”
Problem- What will I do if the kids are trying to phone me?
MacGyver says- “They have other people that they can contact if it’s an emergency and then those people can contact your emergency contact number you left on the fridge if it’s an emergency.”
Problem- What if there is a lull in the conversation and I need to scroll aimlessly through my newsfeed?
MacGyver says- “You should enjoy the silence or talk about other interesting stuff you have been involved in lately.”
Problem- What if I wake up early in the morning, and there is no phone to check?
MacGyver says- “Take a notebook and write or go for a walk along the beach, but let’s be honest, you have just woken up from a big drinking session, and you won’t be able to do either of those.”
Problem- What if I want to take photos?
MacGyver says- “Take a camera” You may need to buy new batteries before you do, just saying!
Problem- What if I break down?
MacGyver says- “Wave someone down, go to the closest shop or start walking to the closest shop and phone for help.”
Thanks, MacGyver!!!! Problem solved I didn’t give in to my phones demands!
While I was away, I didn’t think about my phone once. I wasn’t lost. I didn’t feel as though there was something missing and I had an awesome time without being distracted from what was going on around me.
Would you be up for a 24hour challenge?
