Why Okinawan Karate?
Okinawan Karate is not sport Karate like you see in the movies, but a very traditional Martial Art. This enables people of all ages and abilities to practice Karate-Do
Okinawa is the birth place of Karate and is home to some of the oldest Martial Art styles in the World
When asked Why I did Karate?
I had to think for moment to truly be able to answer that question. I do it to master my mind, learn self control and to keep my ego in check. Its not about winning the fight with your opponent but more about winning the fight within. This is the one thing that I practice daily for my overall health and wellbeing.
Karate is an individual skill to learn and has taught me many things about myself. It has a way of encouraging you to look within and grow. Okinawan Karate-Do is also great for developing core strength, improving flexibility, enhancing confidence and self-esteem.
Learning the fundamentals of this style is the most important part of our classes. By mastering the fundamentals, they can be easily transferred into each kata.
Over time, you will learn 18 Kata ( sequence of the fundamentals of Karate) Through the practice of these Kata, you will begin to feel the flow of energy. Karate isn’t something you do, its something you feel. I like to think its a moving meditation with the purpose of self-defence.
Our classes are divided into three sections. We begin with a flexibility warm up, followed by the practice of Fundamentals and finishing with Kata.
We are learning a very traditional style of Karate and our aim is to practice to its truest form. This style lends itself to be learnt by anyone whom has a desire to learn an ancient martial art and can be practiced well into your later years in life.
